NOTES:
(1) represents figures of contracts for stores; (2) represents building and civil engineering contracts. All figures are rounded to the nearest thousand and show centrally-placed contracts (i.e. excluding contracts placed locally for supplies of water, electricity, fuel, etc.). The figures relate to the placing of main contracts, and do not necessarily reflect the placing of subcontracts or the location of factories in which the work was done.
1 Contains an estimated element for expenditure by hospital authorities on surgical boots and appliances under centrally-arranged running contracts.
2 These figures are generally based on the site of the work done rather than the address of the contractor, and, in the case of the Ministry of Transport, represent the value of all work commenced.
3 These figures relate to actual expenditure per year under long-term contracts.
4 Work of the following value was allocated in addition to the Royal Ordnance Factory, Birtley, Co. Durham (£000):
1960 1961 1962
2,116 2,692 2,807
5 A contract for £5¼ million was let in the North-East early in 1963.
