§ Mr. Swinglerasked the Minister of Transport what steps he is now taking to relieve traffic congestion on the roads by encouraging the fuller use of rail and other forms of transport.
§ Mr. MarplesThe Government's policy is to give all forms of transport the opportunity to make their right contribution to the needs of the economy. In particular, we are seeking to create the conditions in which the railways can give a standard of service which will attract to them the types of traffic appropriate to rail. This may give some relief on the roads but the problem of road congestion is really separate. The Government's programme of road investment and the traffic management measures of the Ministry of Transport and other traffic authorities are aimed at tackling it as effectively and speedily as possible.
