HC Deb 27 November 1962 vol 668 cc24-5W
48. Mr. Swingler

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he is taking to encourage the diversification of industry in North Staffordshire, in view of the comparatively high proportion of disabled persons unable to find work.

Mr. D. Price

Although there is a comparatively high proportion of unemployed disabled workers in North Staffordshire, the general level of unemployment in North Staffordshire is below the national average. In view of the overriding needs of the development districts for more employment, my first obligation must be to steer new industrial development to these districts. But my right hon. Friend would be prepared to approve any suitable projects of a kind which would provide employment for the disabled workers in the area.
