HC Deb 20 November 1962 vol 667 cc105-6W
Mr. Swingler

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will secure from the University Grants Committee and publish in HANSARD the latest figures for the number of overseas students holding places in British universities and the proportion of places they hold; and how many of them come from the Commonwealth.

mencing in October of each of the years 1945, 1950 and 1955.

Mr. Barber

On the basis of the Ministry of Labour Cost of Living Index, Interim Index of Retail Prices and Index of Retail Prices, the percentages by which the original value of these Civil Service pensions had fallen by October, 1962, after taking into account previous Pensions (Increase) Acts, are shown in the following Table: it does not take into account the effect of the Pensions (Increase) Bill now before Parliament.

Mr. Barber

I would refer the hon. Member to page 2 of Cmnd. 1855 (Return from Universities and University Colleges) which was placed before the House this month by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer. This shows that the number of full-time overseas students holding places in British universties in the academic year 1960–61 was 11,608, representing 10.7 per cent. of the total full-time students. 6,932 of these were from the Commonwealth.
