Fraserasked the President of the Board of Trade what is the total area of factory space under construction, or approved for the provision of alternative employment in that part of the Scottish coal field in which collieries have been closed in 1962 or are planned to be closed in the next twelve months.
§ Mr. D. PriceThe counties mainly affected by closures in the Scottish coal fields are Ayr, Dumfries, Fife, Lanark and the Lothians. In these counties 3¼ million sq. ft. of new factory space is now under construction, over ½ million sq. ft. have recently been completed and a further 2½ million sq. ft. have been approved. These totals exclude new factory space which is not expected to result in additional employment.
