HC Deb 14 November 1962 vol 667 c49W
67. Mr. R. Edwards

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware of the widespread dissatisfaction arising out of the hiring of motor vehicles due to many of these vehicles being unfit for road service; and whether he will issue regulations under the Consumer Protection Act, 1961, to prevent the hiring of cars unless they have been properly tested and conform to reasonable road safety standards.

Mr. Marples

No. Under existing legislation it is an offence subject to penalty to let out on hire a motor vehicle which is not in safe condition. I have no information to suggest that this offence is frequent or widespread.
