HC Deb 28 May 1962 vol 660 c86W
Mr. Collick

asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science what has been the total amount of public money spent each year since 1950 on research into the causes of leukaemia and its cure.

Mr. Denzil Freeth

Studies on leukaemia are being carried out by the Medical Research Council as part of its programme of cancer research but it is not possible to estimate expenditure on leukaemia research separately.

Annual expenditure from public funds by the Medical Research Council on cancer research has increased since 1950 from about £157,000 to about £783,000.

The approximate annual figures are as follows:

£
1950–51 157,000
1951–52 200,000
1952–53 395,000
1953–54 335,000
1954–55 289,000
1955–56 327,000
1956–57 400,000
1957–58 486,000
1958–59 499,000
1959–60 583,000
1960–61 650,000
1961–62 783,000

Relevant research financed by public funds is also undertaken in the universities and hospitals of the National Health Service.
