asked the Lord Privy Seal what are the key posts occupied by British personnel on the permanent staff at the United Nations Headquarters in New York; how these compare with those occupied by representatives of other countries; and what is the method of selection for these posts.

Mr. P. Thomas:

Of fourteen Under-Secretaries in the United Nations Secretariat in New York, one is British. Of sixty-three posts in the two next highest grades of Director and Principal Officer, twelve are held by British nationals. In addition to these, two of the eighteen senior staff administering United Nations voluntary programmes for technical assistance are British. As the list of other countries represented in the senior grades of the Secretariat is long, I will, with permission, circulate it in the OFFICIAL REPORT. Appointments to all pests in the United Nations Secretariat are made by the Secretary General.
