HC Deb 09 May 1962 vol 659 c44W
50. Mr. Marten

asked the Minister of Transport whether he put in a bid for the purchase of the toll bridge at Aldwark in Yorkshire; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Marples

No. The Aldwark toll bridge is on a classified road and it would be for the local highway authorities to decide whether or not to make an offer for it. I understand that no such offer has been made by them recently. As I explained to the House on 16th March, in the debate on tolls initiated by my hon. Friend, the money available for roads is better employed in paying for improvements than in buying out tolls.
