HC Deb 09 May 1962 vol 659 cc56-7W
Sir W. Bromley-Davenport

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps have been taken to accept The Cloud, near Buglawton, on the borders of Cheshire and Staffordshire, in settlement of estate duty; and if he will make a statement.

Sir E. Boyle

In 1958 the executors of the late Lord Egerton of Tatton offered 135 acres of Cloud Hill to the Inland Revenue in part settlement of Estate Duty. The land has now been accepted by the Commissioners of Inland Revenue at a cost to the National Land Fund of £3,760, and has been transferred to the National Trust. The Cloud is a well known local landmark, affording extensive views over the surrounding countryside, and is easily accessible from industrial Staffordshire. The Cheshire and Staffordshire County Councils and the Congleton Borough Council have given financial assistance to the National Trust towards the maintenance of this stretch of open countryside.
