HL Deb 27 March 1962 vol 238 c960WA
LORD BROUGHSHANE

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the total amount of office space constructed by private enterprise in the London area during the last fifteen years, and how much of this space has been leased by Government Departments.

THE JOINT PARLIAMENTARY SECRETARY, MINISTRY OF HOUSING AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT (EARL JELLICOE)

I regret that the information is not available in this form. Between mid-1948 and the end of 1960, 29 million square feet of new office space was constructed by private enterprise in central London; that is, the area bounded by the main-line stations.

In the years 1957–61 inclusive, 530,000 square feet of office space in the Cities of London and Westminster and the Borough of Holborn was leased by the Ministry of Works and occupied by Government Departments. Most of this was in new buildings. During the same period 620,000 square feet of accommodation was released.

House adjourned at twenty-seven minutes past eight o'clock.
