HC Deb 01 March 1962 vol 654 cc173-4W
Mr. Iremonger

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what plans are under consideration for the development of the economy of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony when the phosphate deposits on Ocean Island are exhausted.

Mr. Maudling

A Revenue Equalisation Fund is being built up against the time when revenue from phosphates ceases. Copra and fisheries are the only other resources known. The copra industry is being improved and extended but the prospects for fisheries are uncertain.
