HC Deb 04 June 1962 vol 661 cc20-1W
Mr. Randall

asked the Minister of Labour what was the estimated loss of jobs in the Northern Region in each of the last five years; and what was the number of new jobs created in each of those years.

Mr. Hare

The following table gives the number of workers discharged as redundant, and jobs estimated to arise from Industrial Development Certificates in the years stated. From mid-1957 to mid-1961 the total number of insured employees in Northern Region is estimated to have risen by 16,000.

NORTHERN REGION
Year *Approximate number of workers discharged as redundant †Approximate number of jobs estimated to arise from Industrial Development Certificates issued during the year
1957 3,200 7,300
1958 14,300 4,000
1959 12,600 3,400
1960 12,400 7,900
1961 9,200 12,400
*These figures are estimates based on reports received by local offices from employers; they are not comprehensive and relate largely to manufacturing industries and mining. They include some workers who were declared redundant but were subsequently re-employed by their employers in other establishments.
† Based on estimates given by firms concerned.
