HC Deb 25 July 1962 vol 663 cc147-8W
Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland if, as a result of his study of the annual reports presented to him under Section 2 (3) of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland Act, 1954, he will state the policy of the Board of Trustees regarding the number of antiquities to be put on public exhibition at any one time, the number to be kept in storage, and the frequency with which they are interchanged.

Mr. Noble

I understand that it is the Board's policy to exhibit permanently all objects of outstanding historic or aesthetic interest. Changes are made from time to time in the selection of other material placed on view.

Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many and which local museums in Scotland have been unable to accept loans of exhibits requested by them on loan from the National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh.

Mr. Noble

Two applications by local museums for the loan of objects from the National Museum of Antiquities have been refused since the Board of Trustees was constituted in 1954. One, by the Dumfries Burgh Museum, because the object was too fragile to be moved and the other, by the County Museum, Stranraer, because the loan was desired for a longer period than the Trustees are prepared to sanction.
