§ 62. Mr. Jegerasked the Minister of Transport what action he has taken to further the construction of pedestrian bridges or tunnels at sites of heavy road traffic and at railway level crossings; and how many of these have been constructed in the past 10 years.
§ Mr. MarplesI am authorising pedestrian subways and footbridges in increasing numbers as part of road improvement schemes. But these structures are very expensive and often difficult to site and people are not always willing to use them. Over the past 10 years 178 subways and 42 footbridges have been built by highway authorities in England and Wales.
