HC Deb 04 July 1962 vol 662 cc46-7W
52. Mr. Brockway

asked the Lord Privy Seal how the British delegate to the General Assembly of the United Nations voted on the resolution recommending a new constitutional conference in Southern Rhodesia; and how many delegations voted in favour of the resolution, how many voted against, and how many abstained.

Mr. Heath

As we wished to demonstrate in the strongest possible way our disapproval not only of the resolution itself but of the whole proceedings, the British representative did not participate in the vote on the resolution, which was adopted by 73 votes for and one against, with 27 abstentions. These abstentions showed that we were by no means alone in our view of the proceedings.
