HC Deb 04 July 1962 vol 662 c43W
Mr. MaeDermot

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will reconsider the proposal to construct a roundabout at the junction of the Derby Inner Ring Road and Friar Gate in order to preserve as far as possible the architectural merits of this ancient street.

Mr. Marples

I regret that the proposed roundabout will affect some buildings of arcihtectural merit or historical interest. The Derby County Borough Council have designed the Inner Ring, Road on the basis of traffic control by roundabouts at main intersections. I believe that this is the best means in all the circumstances of providing for the traffic flaw at this junction but any objections to compulsory purchase orders for the land required will be carefully considered.
