§ 76. Sir D. Kaberryasked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many civil servants, established or permanent, and temporary, respectively, were employed in the Scottish Department offices on 1st March, 1951, and 1st March, 1962, or the nearest available dates; and what was the total, respectively, of the salaries and wages paid on those dates.
§ Mr. MaclayOn 1st April, 1951, the numbers of permanent and temporary non-industrial staff in my Departments were 3,825 and 1,280, respectively. In the year ending on 31st March, 1951, the total of the salaries and wages was about £2,517,000. I regret that it is not possible, without undue labour, to give separately the amounts paid to permanent and temporary staff. On 1st April, 1962, the numbers of staff were 4,917 permanent and 1,145 temporary. In the year ending on 31st March, 1962, the total of wages and salaries was about £6,462,000. Between 1951 and 1962 there were increases in the staffs of my Departments by reason of transfers of functions from other Ministries and from Regional Hospital Boards and some staffs, particularly prison and borstal staff, have required strengthening.
