HC Deb 04 July 1962 vol 662 cc47-8W
56. Mr. Wall

asked the Lord Privy Seal, in view of the slow progress being made in the repatriation of the assets of British subjects under the terms of the Anglo-Egyptian Financial Agreement, he will make Government loans of up to £5,000 available to those whose assets in Egypt are still blocked.

Mr. Heath

Her Majesty's Government are well aware of the seriousness of this problem, and, as the House will know, have taken it up with the Government of the United Arab Republic. They do not consider that a system of loans such as that suggested by my hon. Friend would be the best solution to the problem; but they are actively examining other ways of settling outstanding problems under the Financial Agreement, including that of the repatriation of British assets up to £E5,000 per individual. An announcement will be made to the House as soon as any settlement is reached.
