asked Her Majesty's Government:

The number of persons convicted of crimes of violence in the years 1960 and 1961, the number of such persons in respect of whom hospital orders were made under Part V of the Mental Health Act, 1959, and the number and duration of any restriction orders attaching to these hospital orders.

The number of persons convicted in England and Wales during 1960 of crimes of violence (i.e. crimes classified under the numbers 1 to 15 in the Criminal Statistics) was 10,259, and the provisional figure for the first nine months of 1961 is 3,270. The provisions of Part V of the Mental Health Act, 1959, came into effect on November 1, 1960, and the provisional figures for convictions of crimes of violence, and for hospital and restriction orders made under the Act in respect of persons so convicted, in the period November 1, 1960, to September 30, 1961, are:
