HC Deb 28 February 1962 vol 654 c142W
50. Mr. Wall

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty if he will make a statement about the development of hovercraft for the Royal Navy.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

The Admiralty is co-ordinating the Services' interest in hovercraft. With the co-operation of the Ministry of Aviation, which is responsible for the military research and development work, the Admiralty has arranged a programme by which S.R.N.1 will start sea-keeping and other basic trials with the Royal Navy in March. It is hoped that S.R.N.2, which is undergoing contractors' trials now, will also be available for Service trials in the second half of this year. In due course further experimental trials will be arranged.
