HC Deb 28 February 1962 vol 654 c146W
63. Mr. Millan

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) how many new houses he estimates will be required in Scotland over the next ten years to provide for population increases and increases in the number of household units;

(2) what estimates he has made of Scotland's housing needs over the next ten years in terms of total new houses required; and if he will state the figures upon which Government housing policy is based.

Mr. Maclay

Subject to review when further information is available from the 1961 census, the number required to provide for population increases and increases in the number of households may be about 125,000. For replacement of existing houses about 175,000 may be needed, making a total of about 300,000 over the ten-year period. Subject to reconciling the demands of all essential services on the resources available, Government housing policy envisages during that period a total output of this order by all agencies.
