HC Deb 21 February 1962 vol 654 cc58-9W
Mrs. Butler

asked the Minister of Health whether, in view of the prolonged suffering involved in the present method of smallpox vaccine manufacture in this country, he will encourage the development of other methods, such as the use of tissue cultures or chick embryos.

Mr. Powell

I understand that considerable progress towards the use of tissue culture is being made.

Mrs. Butler

asked the Minister of Health whether the sheep or other animals used to produce smallpox vaccine are afterwards used for human consumption.

Mr. Powell

This is not within my knowledge. I understand that none is sold.
