HC Deb 21 February 1962 vol 654 c50W
56. Mr. Willis

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty if he will detail those ships upon which extensive refits and modernisation work has been commenced since 1955 and subsequently cancelled, and the costs involved in each case.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

In the last seven years, work on three ships which had been taken in hand for extended refits was subsequently abandoned following changes in defence policy. The ships were:

  • H.M.S. Swiftsure—cost£1,830,000.
  • H.M.S. Gravelines—cost£220,000.
  • H.M.S. St. James—cost£210,000.
No modernisations have been abandoned.
