Mr. J. Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average cost of construction in Scotland of a local authority house with accommodation equivalent to a three-bedroom house in England and Wales.

Mr. Maclay

The average cost of construction of a typical four-apartment local authority house in Scotland in the second half of 1961 was£1,974, exclusive of site servicing, land, and professional fees.

Mr. Robertson

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the average charge per house to the housing revenue accounts of local authorities in Scotland of the following items, namely, loan charges and repayments, management, repairs and rate contribution.

Approximate figures for 1959–60—the latest available—are as follows. Loan charges averaged£55 per house, supervision and management£2 6s., and repairs£8 14s. Contributions to housing revenue accounts from local rates averaged£24 10s.
