HC Deb 20 February 1962 vol 654 cc40-1W
Sir B. Janner

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the numbers of nationals of the German Federal Republic who have acquired British nationality in each of the years from 1948 to 1962 and who have retained their nationality in the German Federal Republic.

Mr. R. A. Butler

The numbers of Germans who obtained citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies by naturalisation in the years from 1948 to 1961 are as follows:

1948 4,495
1949 1,688
1950 736
1951 435
1952 252
1953 401
1954 782
1955 626
1956 498
1957 470
1958 262
1959 366
1960 520
1961 335

Separate figures are not available for the Federal Republic of Germany, nor are totals kept of cases in which citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies has been conferred by registration on German minors or on German women who have married citizens of the United Kingdom and Colonies. No information is available of the numbers who have retained German nationality; this is a matter determined by German law.
