HC Deb 20 February 1962 vol 654 cc30-1W
77. Mr. Callaghan

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what action has been taken by him and by local authorities to lay down standards designed to ensure that proper foundations are laid when new house building takes place; and if he will institute a review of the present procedure.

Dr. Hill

The model building bye-laws issued by my Department and adopted by local authorities require that foundations shall take the load of a building and shall safeguard the building against subsoil swelling or shrinking. I am not aware that these requirements have proved unsatisfactory, but they will be reviewed during the drafting of the building regulations to be made under the Public Health Act, 1961.
