HC Deb 15 February 1962 vol 653 c185W
Q15. Mr. D. Foot

asked the Prime Minister whether his attention has been drawn to the statement by Sir Roy Welensky that the British Parliament could not use its legal powers to provide for dissolution of the Federation except at the request or with the consent of the Parliament of the Federation; and what assurances were given by Her Majesty's Government to Sir Roy Welensky before this statement was made.

The Prime Minister

I have seen reports of Sir Roy Welensky's speech. As the text makes clear he was referring to the Joint Announcement of April, 1957, by the British and Federal Governments; apart from that no assurance has been given by Her Majesty's Government about legislation affecting the Federation.
