HC Deb 14 February 1962 vol 653 c153W
60. Mr. McKay

asked the Minister of Transport how many more people are unemployed in the shipbuilding and marine engineering industry now than in January, 1961; whether the figures for Tyneside show an increase or decrease over this period; and whether he anticipates an improvement of the situation in 1962.

Vice-Admiral Hughes Hallett

In the United Kingdom 3,393 more persons were registered as unemployed in shipbuilding, ship repairing and marine engineering in January, 1962, than in January, 1961. For the Tyne, the figure is 211.

Output in the present year will be to a large extent governed by orders already booked, and I do not think much improvement this year is likely.
