HC Deb 14 February 1962 vol 653 c155W
66. Mr. Peyton

asked the Minister of Transport if he will introduce legislation allowing taxis to ply for hire on any route they choose, thereby allowing to members of the public a free choice between alternative forms of conveyance to and from their work.

Mr. Hay

I assume my hon. Friend's Question arises from the case, concerning the grounds on which road service licences are issued, about which we recently exchanged letters. I do not think that it would be right to change the law which—in return for their considerable public obligations—gives bus operators certain compensating advantages.
