HC Deb 21 December 1962 vol 669 cc273-4W
Mr. Paget

asked the Minister of Public Building and Works what steps he is taking to preserve Roman remains at Irchester disturbed by the diversion of the A.45.

Mr. Sharples

At our request the traffic authorities have considerably modified the original proposal which would have involved the destruction of the southern defences, including the gateway, of the site of a Roman Station. In return we have accepted, subject to prior archaeological examination and recording, a modified scheme which affects only a very small portion of this buried site. Arrangements are being made for the preservation of any archaeological finds.
