HC Deb 20 December 1962 vol 669 c226W
Lord Balniel

asked the Minister of Education which local education authorities do not now have one or more audiometers in use for audiometric examinations of school children.

Sir E. Boyle

A special inquiry made in 1960 showed that 21 local education authorities had no audiometers. Nine of these authorities reported arrangements for using or referring school children to hospital audiometric services. In 1961 a circular issued by the Ministries of Health and Educaton asked local authorities to review the adequacy of methods of finding cases of impaired hearing in young children. The importance of adequate screening for hearing loss in young children was again stressed in Circular 10/62 issued by my Department in September, 1962.
