Mr. Emrys Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the latest information he has received about the number of Service men applying for nomination papers for the Colne Valley and Rotherham by-elections; and what proposals he now has for dealing with the matter.

Mr. Brooke

At 10.0 a.m. yesterday the returning officer of Colne Valley had received 132 applications, of which 68 were known to be from Service men; and the returning officer of Rotherham had received 465 applications, of which 185 were known to be from Service men. As regards the second part of the Question I would refer the hon. Member to the statement which I made on 18th December.
