HC Deb 20 December 1962 vol 669 cc227-8W
Mr. Dempsey

asked the Minister of Housing and Local Government and Minister for Welsh Affairs what is the average cost of a four-apartment council house; and what are the average annual rents and rates, respectively, paid at the latest convenient date.

Sir K. Joseph

In England and Wales the nearest equivalent to a four-apartment house is a three-bedroom house. The average cost of council houses of this type—including land, site development and fees—approved during 1961 was £2,255.

In 1960–61, the average annual rent received for all local authority dwellings in England and Wales—including flats and houses and ranging from one- bedroom to four-bedroom dwellings—was £54 12s. I have no information about the average amount paid in rates.
