HC Deb 20 December 1962 vol 669 cc248-9W
Mr. Holt

asked the Minister of Power what steps the Government are taking to extend electric power capacity sufficiently to sustain at least a 4 per cent. increase in the national product each year without power cuts.

Mr. Wood

I approve the Electricity Boards' general programmes of capital development each year; these take account of the expected rate of growth of the different sectors of the economy and are designed to meet the growing demand for electricity. The National Economic Development Council is studying the implications of an average annual increase of 4 per cent. in the national product. This figure is not a forecast; it was chosen as a reasonably ambitious figure to bring out the problems of faster economic growth. The Council's study is not yet complete.
