HC Deb 18 December 1962 vol 669 c172W
Mr. Harper

asked the Minister of Power what research is being conducted under the auspices of his Department into the preparation of smokeless fuels from the types of coal that are mined in Yorkshire.

Mr. Peyton

None: but the Coal Research Establishment of the National Coal Board is carrying out research into a number of new processes for the production of smokeless fuel for both open fires and closed domestic appliances; the programme includes a study of the application of the most promising of these processes to types of coal mined in Yorkshire.

The Board and the Gas Council are also continually seeking means of extending the range of acceptable coals for established processes, for which Yorkshire coals are already widely used.
