HC Deb 18 December 1962 vol 669 cc164-5W
Mr. Mason

asked the Minister of Aviation if he will publish a list of the administrative, executive and technical officers of his Department with salaries of more than £1,500 per annum who on resigning or retiring during 1946–51 took up posts with industrial firms, signifying which of these did so within two years of leaving the Civil Service in cases requiring the approval of his Department, and also naming the firms they joined; and if he will indicate how many of those so affected were specially kept on until the end of the war period.

Mr. Amery

The following table shows the numbers of officers by grades for whom applications to take up posts with industrial firms within two years of leaving the Department were approved during the years 1946–51. The list is not wholly comparable with those given in reply to the hon. Member's previous Questions about later years because, following an examination of the working of the procedure which was carried out within my Department in 1955, the field of review was extended to a wide range of junior posts.

Year Grade of Officer
1946 1 Deputy Director-General (Engineer).
1 Deputy Director (Engineer).
1947 1 Under-Secretary.
1 Assistant Director (Engineer).
1948 1 Director (Engineer).
1949 1 Principal Executive Officer.
1 Chief Scientific Officer.
1 Deputy Director (Research and Development).
1950
1951 1 Under-Secretary.
1 Principal Assistant Secretary.
1 Principal Executive Officer.
2 Controllers.
1 Chief Scientific Officer.
1 Deputy Chief Scientific Officer.

This includes four officers in former Ministry of Supply posts no longer part of the Ministry of Aviation. No records are now available in respect of the former Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The names of the firms concerned at the time of application are as follows:

  • Edgar Allan & Cu.
  • Avimo Ltd.
  • Bristol Aeroplane Co. Ltd.
  • British Aluminium Co. Ltd.
  • British Messier Ltd.
  • E. K. Cole Ltd.
  • Fairey Aviation Co. Ltd.
  • Glaxo Laboratories Ltd.
  • Sir G. Godfrey & Partners Ltd
  • Hawkers Ltd.
  • Hawker Siddeley Group.
  • L. C. Hayward & Co. Ltd.
  • Lithgow Group.
  • Mond Nickel Co. Ltd.
  • Ratcliffe Engineering Co.
  • Rotol Ltd.
  • Self-Priming Pump Co. Ltd.
  • Standard Telephone Laboratories Ltd.
  • T. Summerson & Sons Ltd.

There is no record of whether the appointments for which approval was given were actually made, nor is there any evidence that any of the officers were specially kept on until the end of the war period.
