46. Mr. Iremonger

asked the Lord Privy Seal how many Russian nationals are resident in the United Kingdom and officially employed by the Russian Embassy and official agencies; how many of Her Majesty's subjects are resident in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in similar capacities; and whether he will make a statement on the implications of the present arrangement from the point of view of national security.

Mr. P. Thomas

There are at present 131 Soviet nationals resident in the United Kingdom and officially employed at the Soviet Embassy in London; in addition, there are 99 Soviet nationals employed at the Soviet Trade Delegation at Highgate and approximately 43 employees in various Soviet commercial and journalistic enterprises in London.

The total number of British subjects resident in the Soviet Union and employed at the British Embassy in Moscow is 108. There are, in addition, between 10 and 15 other British subjects resident in the Soviet Union who are employed in capacities such as journalists and representatives of British European Airways.

Her Majesty's Government are fully aware of the possible implications of the present arrangements for national security.
