Lucasasked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if, in view of the large number of would-be candidates in forthcoming by-elections, he will introduce legislation to ensure that the successful candidate and the runner-up shall not forfeit their deposits if they obtain the appropriate proportion of votes.
§ Mr. BrookeThe Government are at present considering as a matter of46W urgency the problems raised by apparently frivolous candidatures. I will keep the point referred to by my hon. Friend in mind.
