59. Mr. Forrest

asked the Postmaster-General how many extra staff were employed by each head postmaster in Northern Ireland during the Christmas and New Year period last year; how many were ex-Service men; and if he will give an assurance that every suitable ex-Service man who applies will be engaged this Christmas and that preference will be given to them for any casual work available during the year.

A total of 2,827 extra staff were recruited in Northern Ireland for the 1961 Christmas period, 459 of whom were ex-Service men. Below are the detailed figures for each head postmaster's area. Preference is given throughout the year to suitable unemployed ex-Service men who apply for casual work; and every suitable ex-Service applicant for whom a vacancy is available will be engaged this Christmas.
