HC Deb 11 December 1962 vol 669 cc44-5W
Mr. Harper

asked the Parliamentary Secretary for Science what grant is made by Her Majesty's Government to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for its research into the chemical uses of coal; what proportion of this grant goes to the Coal Tar Research Association; and how much finance is given for research into work undertaken by the British Coal Utilisation Research Association.

Mr. Denzil Freeth

No funds are voted to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research specially for research into the chemical uses of coal. In 1961 the Department made a grant of £24,000 to the Coal Tar Research Association in aid of its general programme which includes work on the chemical uses of coal. It also made a grant of £86,000 to the British Coal Utilisation Research Association whose programme, as I told the hon. Member on 4th December, includes a limited amount of work on this subject.
