Mr. Shinwell

asked the Minister of Defence (1) what information is in possession of his Department of the number of active and reserve divisions in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics;

(2) what information he has on the number of modern aircraft in the possession of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics;

(3) what is his information about the number of modern tanks in the possession of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics;

(4) what information is in the possession of his Department on the number of submarines owned by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics;

(5) what information he has about the number of modern naval vessels owned by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.

The Soviet Army consists of about 160 line divisions of all kinds, of which 100 are in Eastern Europe, and has some 35,000 modern tanks with a similar number in reserve. The Soviet Navy has some 3,000 naval vessels including over 400 submarines. The U.S.S.R. possess about 17,500 aircraft of all types, including about 14,000 military aircraft.
