§ 156. Mr. Awberyasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what new industries have been introduced into Malta since it was announced that the three services would be dispensing with a large number of men during the next few years; and what help, other than budgetary assistance, is to be given to the Maltese Government to provide gainful employment when these men become redundant.
§ Mr. SandysI assume that the hon. Member is referring to the announcement made on 9th October. As regards the first part of the Question, the matter is one for the Malta Government itself but I understand that, although no new industries have actually been started since that date, a number of projects are under consideration.
As regards the second part of the Question, the Malta Government is increasing the rate of spending the substantial capital assistance made available by the United Kingdom in order to provide increased employment.
