§ Mr. Longdenasked the Lord Privy Seal how many times each of the five permanent members of the Security Council has exercised the right of veto accorded by Article 27 (3) of the Charter of the United Nations; and in the case of the United Kingdom, whether Her Majesty's Government have persisted in its exercise.
§ Mr. P. ThomasThe veto has been exercised by China once, the United Kingdom twice, France four times and by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics one hundred times. The United Kingdom vetoes were exercised on the 30th October, 1956, in opposition to resolutions on the situation in Egypt. Since the situation was thereafter discussed in the General Assembly, no question of persisting in the exercise of the veto arose.
