HC Deb 01 August 1962 vol 664 c107W
Mr. Shinwell

asked the Civil Lord of the Admiralty what measures are being taken by his Department to place more orders for stores, clothing and other requirements in the County of Durham and the north-east.

Mr. C. Ian Orr-Ewing

In accordance with standard Government practice, Admiralty orders are whenever practicable placed following competitive tendering, in which firms in the County of Durham and the north-east are given full opportunity to compete with other firms in the United Kingdom.

In allocating the orders the tenders of any firms situated in Development Districts receive certain preferential treatment, but it is not possible to differentiate between one Development District and another.
