HC Deb 19 April 1962 vol 658 c96W
36 Mr. Hannan

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if he is aware of the recent increases in vegetable prices; and if he will introduce legislation to enable him to control the retail prices of these commodities in order to mitigate the present hardship caused to pensioners and other poor people.

Mr. Vane

After a difficult growing season and a severe winter such as we have just had, fresh vegetables are inevitably scarcer and dearer. Price control could not relieve a temporary shortage. It would do nothing to increase supplies or improve distribution.
