§ Mr. W. Clarkasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make a statement on the effects on the scales of academic salaries of the 3 per cent. increase recently announced in the total provision for academic salaries.
§ Mr. BrookeI am advised by the University Grants Committee that in their view the increase in the total salary bill for university teachers which the Government have been able to sanction this year should be directed to improving the salary scales of lecturers and assistant lecturers. The Government accept this advice. The new scales thus recommended for lecturers and assistant lecturers, details of which are set out below, are effective from 1st106W April, 1962. There will be minor consequential adjustments for certain senior lecturers and readers whose present salaries are below the new maximum for lecturers. The cost of this increase will be approximately £1 million in a full year, on the basis of current numbers. The sums provided to meet the increase will be additional to the recurrent grants recently announced.
