§ 48 and 49. Mr. Wainwrightasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) if he will give the estimated number of students whose application for university training will be refused because of the shortage of places, for the years 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966;
(2) if he will give the estimated number of students who will be applying for university places for the years 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966.
§ Sir E. BoyleTo arrive at estimates in the form requested would entail making a series of assumptions about the future numbers of those obtaining appropriate qualifications for university entry. This is a matter on which I have no doubt that the Committee on Higher Education will have views, based on much fuller statistics than have been available in the past, and I would prefer to await their findings.
I would refer the hon. Member to the Answer which I gave on 10th April, which indicated that over the next five years the percentage of the relevant age-group entering the universities would remain at least as high as at present.
