§ Sir M. Lindsayasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what action is to be taken to implement the recommendations of the Sir William Hayter's Committee in regard to Oriental and African studies in Great Britain.
§ Sir E. BoyleI understand that the University Grants Committee have accepted the recommendations of the Hayter Committee and are making financial provision to support developments in these studies during the coming quinquennium. The total sums to be allocated to universities will be those recommended by the Hayter Committee, rising from £118,000 in 1962–63 to £290,000 in 1966–67, and amounting over the next five years to just over £1 million in all. These grants will be earmarked for the purposes intended. The University Grants Committee are now actively discussing detailed proposals with the universities.
