HC Deb 17 April 1962 vol 658 cc42-3W
82. Sir William Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many of the directors of Baileys Ltd. in Malta, who were appointed by Her Majesty's Government, have tendered their resignations.

Mr. Maudling

Two directors were appointed by the company at Her Majesty's Government's request, Sir Richard Yeabsley and the Honourable Hanning Philipps. They have both resigned as has also Mr. Lawrence Robson another director of the company. Sir Richard and Mr. Philipps have assured me that their resignations are not due to any differences with the Government.

Naturally I am very much concerned over this development, and I am requiring the company to appoint a Government director. This will be Mr. William Rendell, whose services are being made available by the Colonial Development Corporation for a year in the first instance. I am also arranging for an inquiry into the affairs of the company. This will be conducted by Mr. J. R. Muirie, an accountant who is a partner in the firm of Peat Marwick Mitchell. The chairman of the company has agreed to give me his full co-operation.
